Hello Afromusic-philes,

For those unaware, winners of the inaugural Museke Online African Music Awards (MOAMAS) were announced today with Mozambique’s Lizha James crowned the Artist of the Year beating out perennial faves like Fally Ipupa (DRC), Wande Coal (9ja)  and HHP (SA) among others.  Lizha also won the Best Music Video while her compatriot Dama Do Bling won Best Female Artist  and Best Hip Hop song. Angola’s Ralph Anselmo is definitely the man of the hour with nods as Best Male Artist and  Best Album  while his female compatriot Perola proved her worth with wins in the Southern African song of the year and Best R & B song of the year categories.

So far the leaderboard by country is as follows:

  • Angola- 7
  • Mozambique-6
  • Egypt , Ghana & Nigeria -5 (tie)
  • Kenya 2
  • DRC, Tanzania, Cabo Verde -1 (tie)

Given the aggressive online campaigns by Lusaphone artistes and the consequent wins, the results are rather evident. Perhaps they will serve as a wakeup call for established artists to re-examine and restructure their online presence in an industry where talent  is limited unless accompanied by strategic use of social media networkds.

Congratulations to all the winners and our personal faves: Sauti Sol and Nneka 😉 For full winners list please click here.
