Summer Student Position

African Canadian Social Development Council

Job Summary

The African Canadian Social Development Council – the umbrella organization of the Continental African Canadian community, which works in the areas of policy, research, planning, and capacity building – is seeking a Summer Student Communications Assistant. This position would appeal most to a student who is returning to college or university in September and who is looking for an opportunity to gain experience in the non-profit sector and build their professional competency skills.

In addition to transcribing interviews from the Council’s current project with African seniors the communications assistant will also research and writing materials for uploading onto the Council’s website. The successful candidate will liaise with the Council’s member organizations as well as other organizations in the Toronto area to update or inform them of the Council’s work, and attend and take minutes of meetings.

Specific Responsibilities

Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the Communications Assistant will:

  • Transcribe interviews conducted with African Canadian seniors currently participating in the African Seniors Network.
  • Contact member organizations and others to update/inform them of the Council’s work
  • Attend meetings and take minutes for the Council
  • Work with the Program Coordinator to organize and document Council events
  • Assist with the redesign of the Council’s website.
  • Assist with producing the Council’s monthly electronic newsletter
  • Other administrative duties to support the work of the Council

Skills and Qualifications

  • Community College or University student
  • Proficient computer skills including typing speed, document formatting and use of publishing software. Overall proficiency with technology
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and to thrive in an open concept office
  • Strong interpersonal, customer service, problem solving, and planning skills
  • Strong ability to work in a team to accomplish tasks, while also capable of working independently


To be eligible to apply for this Canada Summer Jobs position, applicants must:

  • be between 18 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
  • be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and,
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Working Conditions

  • This is a summer student position, 30 hours/ week for 11weeks.
  • Salary $11/hour.
  • Based in Toronto
  • Ideal start date May June 2nd 2010
