$1,950 scholarship for US and Cnd citizens closes Feb 12

Youth Ambassador Scholarship: Kenya
YCI is looking to award five exceptional youth (18 – 30) with a $1,950 scholarship towards a 10-week volunteer placement in Kenya from May 2 to July 12, 2010. These scholarships are part of YCI’s 20th anniversary, and this year YCI has already awarded five scholarships to Youth Ambassadors going to Guyana and Ghana.

Each of the five Kenya scholarships will be awarded to individuals with a demonstrated commitment to their communities. The scholarships are intended to provide young leaders with the opportunity to turn positive civic involvement into global action.

About the placement in Kenya

This exciting opportunity will include a pre-project distance-learning program, followed by an intensive 10-week placement in Kenya. While in Kenya, volunteers will work with YCI’s partner, Kwacha Afrika, to further the reach and relevance of their youth development program. Key project activities may include:

• Design and deliver workshops on gender and health issues
• Design and deliver workshops on gender
• Organize a “Women and Work” guest speakers panel for an audience of 150 to 200 people
• Design and deliver intensive training in small business management to groups of 15 to 20 youth
• Liaise with local employers and conduct a survey assessing barriers to youth employment.
• Assist with the compilation of a job bank and database of resumes
• Design and deliver a course in active citizenship to 15 to 20 young people
• Support peer educators in their efforts to establish a mentorship program for out-of-school youth
• Work with local peer educators, drama groups, youth groups and clubs to promote healthy behavior and conduct HIV/AIDS outreach in rural and urban communities
