$16,000 Scholarship for Protected Persons/Refugees

Description: The Maytree Scholarship Program provides peer and financial support to protected
persons or landed immigrants who were protected persons living without parents in
Toronto, and who have demonstrated success in their academic, work and/or volunteer
life. Monthly meetings give Maytree Scholarship Program participants an opportunity
to develop relationships where they receive support, build networks and have fun. The
group engages in voluntary work throughout the school year, which helps further
develop their sense of civic engagement and responsibility.

Value: The value of The Maytree Scholarship is approximately $16,000 depending on
course selection. Scholarships cover tuition, books, rent, transportation and a living
allowance. Students who participate in the Maytree Scholarship Program may not
accept Canada Student Loans.

Duration: September 2010 to May 2011. A mid-year assessment of the student’s academic
performance will take place.

Eligibility:  The program is open to individuals who:
are protected persons (formally known as Convention refugees – as determined by
the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada); or are landed immigrants, who
were protected persons and have been landed for no more than three years;
are between the ages of 18 and 27;
live without parents in Toronto;
are entering first or second year in an accredited university or community college
in Toronto;
• have obtained an academic standing of at least 75% (or
equivalent) in their final courses in high school if planning to
attend university;
• have obtained an academic standing of at least 70% (or
equivalent) in their final courses in high school if planning to
attend community college;

have obtained an academic standing of at least C+ if currently
enrolled in a university or community college;
have a history of employment and/or volunteer service and are willing to continue
such activities as a complement to their studies during the school year.
Students who are selected for this program will be required to keep in regular contact
with Maytree, attend group meetings, and assist the Foundation with the evaluation of
the program.

Please note that Maytree does not participate in the admission decisions of post-
secondary institutions. Candidates are required to apply independently for admission
to university or community college.

Selection of  Selection will be based on the following criteria:
Academic merit. This will be reflected through an official secondary
school/university/community college transcript of course grades to date.
Financial need.  This will be assessed based on page 5 of the application form.
A history of involvement in the community through volunteer service and/or
employment. We realize that this may be limited due to your recent arrival in
An assessment of your potential to participate in and make a positive contribution
to society.
Procedure: To apply, please submit all of the following:
a signed and completed application form, including your 4 essays;
a copy of your Notice of Decision letter;
a copy of your Confirmation of Permanent Residence along with your Notice of
Decision letter, if you are a landed immigrant;
transcripts from your secondary school, university or community college
(including mid-term grades);
a sample of your school work. This should be a copy of a marked essay you
completed for a grade 12, university or community college course (no science or
math, please).

Candidates considered for this program will be invited for personal interviews.

Deadline:             Friday, March 26, 2010 by 5:00 p.m.
Late applications will not be accepted.
